CLASS LISTINGS

Wednesdays, 4 - 5:30 pm
Painting a Wall Mural, Part II (A Special Project for United Cerebral Palsy's Children's Services) (ages 12 - 16)
Instructor: Felix St. Fort
This class will meet on-site at UCP on Mermaid Lane to paint a wall mural with a "living together in the community through the arts" theme. Students will learn some basic wall mural techniques as they paint the wall, and they will be contributing to a worthy community project. Students must arrange their own transportation to and from the site.
Please call for more information. The mural is in progress, but students can join at anytime. Participation in the project qualifies for SCHOOL-ACCEPTED COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS.
$45 (begins 3/30 and goes until mural is completed; projected for late May)

A Special Creative Writing Workshop with Sandy Crimmins:
The Person in Place
You've just returned from climbing mountains and rafting down rivers. Or you've discovered the joys of sitting in your garden enjoying the sight and smell of flowers. What is it about going somewhere, being somewhere, that makes us want to write? Bring your journal, your looseleaf or you laptop to this one-day workshop on writing about how place affects person, person affects place.
$50 (Registration MUST be received by April 27)

Introduction to Ceramics (ages 8-12)
Instructor: Ben DeMott
A basic ceramics course that will give children a feel for working with clay and developing hand-building techniques. Projects will be glazed and fired to create finished pieces.

Children's Theater (ages 7-10)
Instructor: Kim Williams
Introducing basic acting skills in a fun and lively setting. Children read and act out short stories to develop their confidence and talent.
$90 (3/28 - 6/6; performance 6/6)

6 - 7 pm
Teen Theater (ages 11-14)
Instructor: Kim Williams
Students learn how to develop and practice skills in drama with and without a script. They will shape ideas, learn warm-up techniques and put on a performance of a scripted play.

7 - 9 pm
Ceramics (ages 18+)
Instructor: Ben DeMott
Survey of ceramics course explores various sculptural ceramic techniques from low and high relief tile-making to figural and structural forms.

Teen & Adult Intermediate Ballet (ages 13+)

Join in the new way to learn ballet and workout at the same time! Stretch and strengthen while learning ballet steps and short routines.

Life Drawing with Model (ages 18+)

Working from live models, beginners to advanced students will learn how to draw the human figure.

Vision Thru Art

A sculpture class for visually-impaired and blind adults at all levels of art experience. A variety of media are explored in this friendly and supportive atmosphere. Call for more information.

Shakespeare for Kids (ages 6-12)
Instructor: Terry Brennan
This class will shatter the illusion that Shakespeare's plays are hard to understand by teaching kids how to perform them in a way that is fun and accessible using movement, pop music and dancing. Learning to perform Shakespeare at a young age helps to accelerate children's abilities to read, cultivates an understanding of literature and provides self-confidence in public speaking. (This class is also offered on Wednesdays from 1:30 - 3 pm for home schooling families.)

Tap for Oldies But Goodies (ages 55+)

The older you get the more you need to move and do brain and balance exercises that are also fun. Tap will keep you literally "on the ball!" Music includes Jazz, Gospel, Latin, Rock and Bach.

4 - 5 pm
Beginning Tap (ages 7 - 12)
Instructor: Timothy Yu
Learn beginner tap, or hoofing, as it was known in the 1920s and 30s. Learn to drum and make music with your feet. This course will focus on Philadelphia low fast hoofing, which was created on the city's streets in the 1930s. This course will teach basic steps such as brush, shuffle, flap and hop. You will learn the basics of rhythm and meter, and you will learn some short compositions to amaze your friends and family. (Tap shoes required.) (4/7-5/26)

7 - 9 pm
Creative Writing (ages 18+)
Instructor: Sandy Crimmins
For those new to writing, and for writers who want to explore new areas, this four-week course offers a safe space in which to learn a variety of writing techniques. Exercises will lead to first drafts of stories and poems, peer review and class discussions will help the writer decide on the direction for rewrites.

Precious Metal Clay Jewelry (ages 15+)
Instructor: Martha Kent Martin
It's fast and fun! Create several pieces of beautiful fine silver jewelry using space age clay and simple tools. Knowledge of metal technique not necessary.

Making Masterpieces (ages 5-9)
Instructor: Gary G. Miller
Learn how to create and construct two- and three-dimensional masterpieces! Focusing on imaginative approaches, students will draw, paint and build using traditional and alternative materials and techniques. Art from different cultures will inspire students as they embark on a variety of exciting projects.

Tap for Teens and Adults (ages 13+)

Hone you rhythmic and movement skills with tap combinations set to music from Jazz to Bach. Especially youthful for musicians.

Sundays

5 - 7 pm
Mask Making (ages 15+)
Instructor: Jay Wojnarowski
Students will learn how to make performance quality papier-mâché character masks by sculpting their designs in clay directly onto plaster positives of their own faces. Each student will finish the class with at least one performance quality mask and their own plaster positive, and will be ready to take Part II of this class, Mask Technique, to be held in the following session.
$160 (includes materials) (4/3-5/22)

DANCE CLASSES

* Classes run from September through May. Students may join at any time.
* Call to register before coming to class. For Ballet Classes, instructor will place children in the appropriate class based on experience/ability.
* There will be a free final performance in June 2005.
* There are NO costume fees.
* Ballet Class - Ballet shoes and tights are required. (Assistance is available.)
* Jazz and Hip Hop - Wear lose, comfortable clothes.
* Work/Study Scholarships available. Please call for more information.
* Fees are due the first class of each month. There is a $5 fee for late payments.
* Fees:
$40 per month for 1 class per week
$70 per month for 2 classes per week
$100 per month for 3 classes per week
